Story: A high school student with amnesia tries to uncover what has happened to her. All leading her into deeper troubles ultimately revealing a darkness she could not have imagined.
Part coming of age, part super-heroine origin story. This brilliant Korean film is a wonderful blend of genres and filmmaking. It starts off with a bloody opening at a mysterious facility where a little 8 year old girl has escaped. The headmistress of this apparent gang orders to find the girl and states that she can’t survive long on her own. The girl manages to make it to a beautiful farmhouse only to collapse right on the property. The owners find her and give her shelter and eventually adopt her into their home. As years go by we see the girl now a blossoming young woman Ja-yoon (played by Kim Da-mi) living a pretty normal life. She’s an honor student, helps her parents with farming duties and has her over the top best friend Myung-Hee (played by Go Min-si).
The films first act is slow and steady as we get to know our protagonists surroundings. As it goes Ja-yoon’s normal life soon ends up in peril when her best friend convinces her to join a talent competition that is broadcasted live globally. Here she performs exceedingly well and is revealed to the people who were looking for her in the beginning of the film. This is where the film takes changes gears towards the suspense genre all the way up to the epic climax.
Beautifully shot, amazing visual effects, and outstanding acting by everyone involved but most importantly Kim. She’s relatively new to acting in films let alone being the lead and I was most impressed by her performance and character development. Once you see the film you will know what I’m talking about. I highly recommend this to anyone who loves foreign films. It’s available on Netflix now.
