The Thing About Harry

Writer's picture: StonersaurusStonersaurus

Recently I stumbled upon a little film with a much familiar Title, The Thing About Harry. The title reminded me of late 90's RomCom Classics, but with a LGBTTTQ+ filter. When looking at the cast list I saw 2 names I recognized, the iconic (yes, iconic. I'll fight you for that). Peter Paige and Jake Borelli (probably know him from Grey's Anatomy). I was sold with this two actors, having Niko Terho ("Harry") was a much welcomed bonus.

Off the bat we get "Sam" (Jake Borelli) and his best friend "Stasia" having some very interesting "quality" time. This first scene, though awkward to watch, it grounds what this relationship is about. They are each other's significant other, for a lack of a better word. "Sam" gets a call that starts off our story, in this call "Sam" gets stuck with the task of driving his recently single highschool bully back home with him. When we finally meet "Harry", a fit, tan, curly-haired fratboy type, we get his story about how girlfriend after girlfriend he gets dumped and this is were all the red flags start waiving. For "Harry", he never did anything wrong to get dumped by this women and as we soon find out, men too. "Harry" confesses to "Sam" about him being pansexual, surprising Sam, because the highschool bully which mocked him for being "Different" is now, well "Different" himself.

"Harry" and "Sam", after getting in a little car accident over "Harry's" confession, spend the night together at a motel. What I find different about this movie, being a Queer Film, this is the part were they rip each other's clothes and get freaky. But instead we get a lovely scene with confessions and heart warming moments that start to rebuild this relationship. Once they get to their destination, Harry is basically ambushed by his ex and apparently they are back together. All of "Sam's" hopes about "Harry" go out the window in this moment. "Sam" "knows better" and understands while he felt a subtle faint connection and it was amazing to clear the air, all he could ever get from "Harry" is Friendship.

That's the Thing about "Harry" he is suave, smooth talker, sexy, charming, secretly intelligent but jumps relationship to relationship easily and without mourning the loss and trying to do "the right thing", doesn't come easy for him. The Thing About Sam is that he does not trust easily, he overthinks, is extremely insecure, denies and repress his feelings and this gets you the next 200 misunderstandings that will move the story forward to its end. While the title tells us there is something to look for in "Harry" is actually "Sam's" insecurities and actions that causes the main struggle of the film.

This story by Peter Paige was actually refreshing and sometimes hit the spot with the games played in relationships and how easily it is to auto-sabotage our own opportunities. Simply put this movie was an adorably sweet story about love with the Nostalgic 90's feel to it. With a Soundtrack that includes Marshmallow, Shawn Mendes, Ciara and Troye Sivan; the song that stuck more was the basic yet cute lyrics of I'm Just Wild About Harry by Morgxn and Ben Rector's deep voice and sweet lyrics in Love Like This. By the end of the film I wanted them to work out, I felt sad, happy, heartbroken, we get the roller-coaster of emotions excepted from a classic RomCom. If you get a chance I encourage you to Go watch.
