The Stranger (Quibi)

Story: An unassuming young rideshare driver is thrown into her worst nightmare when a mysterious Hollywood Hills passenger enters her car.

I finally gave in to temptation and downloaded the app Quibi because a friend recommended a horror series that called my attention. I've been reluctant to subscribe to another streaming service because there's just so many lately but this one has the advantage where each episode lasts no more than 15 minutes. After watching the said series I came across another horror one named The Stranger, starring one of my favorite actresses Maika Monroe (It Follows) and Dane Deehan (Kill Your Darlings).

Safe to say I was very overly entertained and involved in the situation unfolding. A situation I found incredibly scary because it's just so realistic. We're all surrounded by technology and no matter how hard we try to keep our lives private, the truth is, is all a huge lie we tell ourselves. Privacy doesn't exist in our modern world. The Stranger exploits that fear into an hour and a half (divided into 13 episodes) of tense circumstances dangerously increasing.

Maika Monroe is fucking realistic and honestly (in my useless opinion) one of the best and charismatic actresses of the modern age. She makes us care for her vulnerable Clare as we go along for the ride. I hated Dane Deehan's guts all the way through the climax which means he did a good job. For the most part, he's scary (especially when he has a fog of mystery surrounding him). Avan Jogia (Now Apocalypse) is an actor I generally don't like but he grew on me here. He made me care for his character's fate.

The opening is the best part as it sets the events in motion into a thrill ride where you don't really know what's going on at first but little by little pieces start unfolding. Does Carl E. have superpowers of some kind? How does he know so many things? Those questions kept me engaged.

As a whole, The Stranger is quite intense and entertaining even if by the end this is somewhat generic, made even better by a committed cast and some violent moments that put a smile on my face. Moves at a fast-paced and constantly keeps you engaged even if predictable.

P.S. I won't be working for Uber anytime soon.
