The Breed

Writer's picture: StonersaurusStonersaurus

Story: A group of five college kids are forced to match wits with unwelcoming residents when they fly to a "deserted" island for a party weekend.

I saw "The Breed" once back in 2006 when it came out. I was bored to tears back then but I have a habit of rewatching old films I hated to see them again with a different life perspective. So I gave "The Breed" another shot and I gotta say this is one of the dullest movies I've seen (and I saw "Man Of Steel").

The acting is terrible so you know. But usually in films like this that's expected. Basically a cast of unknowns by now. Michelle Rodríguez ("Fast And The Furious") is the one who fares better with her being all physical and doing her own stunts but man is she a bad actress. We have Taryn Manning ("Crazy/Beautiful") trying to act all sexy and mysterious. Oliver Hudson ("Black Christmas" 1st remake) & Eric Lively ("The Butterfly Effect 2") play two brothers who don't look anything alike and last but not least we have Hill Harper ("The Boy Next Door") playing the token black guy. All of them play stereotypes and you won't care for their fate. They all look so bored and robotic.

My biggest peeve is visually. Everything looks so boring, dry and colorless. Even movies with less budgets have better style. The production values look cheap and the direction uninspired. And I saw this as a fan of indie low budget horror movies. The writing sucks and some of the things the actors spit is so awful I don't know how they did it with a straight face.

The action doesn't take long to kick in but there's no thrills, no suspense, and no gore (which could've help). I did like the fact that they trained real animals and the way they were used ended up fairly well. But they're not very intimidating. There's a (somewhat) better movie with a similar plot called "The Pack" so go watch that instead.

This is one of the worst films I've ever seen and one of my guilty pleasures is called "Fear Dot Com" so that says a lot. But even that one had flair and atmosphere.

Enjoy the trailer:
