Relic is one of those movies where the less you know the more you'll enjoy. So I'll keep this brief.
One of the best horror movies I've seen all year. If you enjoyed movies such as Hereditary, The VVitch & The Lodge then this is for you. A moody slow burner, as most of the first two acts is us getting to know our characters and trying to understand exactly what is going on. Are they all going slowly mad or is there something more sinister occurring?
Relic is about trauma, abandonment, guilt, depression and ghosts that haunt us. A definitive dive into madness. Like the films I mentioned above this one is dark, ambiguous, creepy & emotional, but not as violent.
The third act is wild and unexpected for a film of its kind. I haven't seen a horror ending this dramatic in a while.
Emily Mortimer gives a layered performance and her character feels very human. Bella Heathcote (I love the girl) is (for me) the true star here. She's truly a delight to watch. Both Bella & Emily are extremely underrated. Robyn Nevin truly creeped me out and her performance is so physical.
Definitively one of my favorite horror films this year next to The Lodge, Possessor, Why Don't You Just Die?, And The Wretched.
