Project Power

Story: When a pill that gives its users unpredictable superpowers for five minutes hits the streets of New Orleans, a teenage dealer and a local cop must team with an ex-soldier to take down the group responsible for its creation.

Project Power is far from my cup of tea but I've enjoyed the recent style of superhero movies that've come out. If you've enjoyed movies like Brightburn or tv shows like The Boys then this is for you. Superheroes with a different point of view. This time a bit more realistic and surrounding drugs that unleash superpowers for 5 minutes. The power is random. Some people burst into flames, leaving permanent damage. Others explode. Others have impenetrable skin. Would you swallow such a pill if it meant you could do extraordinary activities?

Project Power is fast paced, entertaining, stylish, violent, & energetic. Not always original as we've seen this story hundreds of times before but this gets extra points for not being boring, even when clocking at two hours. In my opinion, it's probably a bit longer than it needs to be. I don't know why movies these days feel the need to always be around two hours or more, mainly superhero movies, but that's just me. I'm not a fan of extra long movies that I feel could've been trimmed. But I don't wanna toy with the director's vision.

By the way, maybe is just me but the editing when characters take such powerpills reminded me of those in Requiem For A Dream. You know that hyper-sensorial editing?

Speaking about the cast, Jamie Foxx (Django Unchained) has a powerful on-screen presence which in turn makes me excited for that Spawn live action adaptation we've been reading for years. Everytime he's on display the movie has a fire. Joseph Gordon Lewitt (500 Days Of Summer) brings a tough but charming side. The guy is always a joy to watch. Dominique Fishback (Night Comes On) is someone I've never but has enough charisma to become popular eventually.

Project Power is a good way to kill a couple of hours on Netflix and definitively one of the better movies they've put out recently. I wonder if this would've fared decently in cinemas? As it is full of intense action sequences, groovy special effects, a hot cast and a hip soundtrack. I'm guessing they're probably gonna make a franchise out of this.
