Open 24 Hours

There was a time when slashers like this were dime a dozen and I would go to my local video club to rent the hell of them all. Which is how I discovered my undying love for flicks like I Know What You Did Last Summer, Scream, Urban Legend, Halloween, Valentine, Cherry Falls, etc. Now it is very hard to find a decent slasher as most of them are very low quality. So after 3 years awaiting for Open 24 Hours to pop out I can safely say that I was not disappointed.

Open 24 Hours is pretty straightforward and violent. There are some pretty brutal kills (specially at the end). The film gets quite messy. There's not much tension or suspense as most of the actors (aside from our lead) play stock characters ready for the slaughterhouse. There's not many surprises, aside from a reveal near the end of the second act that I think they should've run with. Vanessa Grasse (Leatherface) is a solid final girl and she's the only one we truly care for. I wanted to see more of Emily Tennant (from Riverdale & who plays the best friend) and it is always a treasure to see Brendan Fletcher (Freddy Vs. Jason). He's a very underrated actor. Even though the killer's costume is simple the coat reminded me of Ben Willis (I Know What You Did Last Summer) so that's a plus and the person who plays him is quite menacing (I won't say who).

The use of colorful filters worked well to express what our leading lady Mary is feeling and to give the film style and a sense of dread. We're never really sure if Mary is crazy or if there's a killer on the loose. My only real complaint is with the running time. I felt this could've been 10 minutes shorter to keep things tighter and flowing better. Some moments and characters could've been without. But just as I was beginning to feel exasperated, the third act comes along and blood starts flowing. Usually these type of films save all the energy for the final act where the inevitable confrontation between our lead and the killer goes down and Open 24 Hours does not disappoint.

I won't spoil anything else for you. I'm very pleased with what I've just witnessed. If you're a slasher/gore hound like me, go see it.
