Monster Man

Writer's picture: StonersaurusStonersaurus

Story: Two guys and a female hitchhiker are terrorized by a monstrous looking man driving a giant monster truck.

As a kid I constantly used to visit my local Video Store and randomly select horror movies I found interesting, hence, how I was introduced to this baby. As a movie collector I've been keeping my eyes on this one because most copies are really expensive but I managed to find a cheap copy on Ebay which made me really happy. Monster Man is definitively mean, silly, cheesy and has a lot of heart even with all the budget restrictions.

Monster Man is more of a buddy road trip movie than anything else. Think Joy Ride with a little bit of Jeepers Creepers & Wrong Turn thrown into the mix. This is mean, fast, silly, cheesy and offensive as hell. Mostly because Justin Urich's character is a complete sexist douchebag who I couldn't wait to bite the dust. It's really hard to care for his character. I can only imagine today's audience watching this. Eric Jungmann plays a cute lead worth rooting for and Aimee Brooks looks hot even if her outfit is way exploitative.

This is nothing we haven't seen before but if you're a fan of old school horror slashers this is a must. Most of the jokes fall flat and not as gory as it could've been but there's still plenty of charm. The killer himself & his monster truck looks bad-ass but underused. He's out for most of the film until the final act. He should've been more present. There's a "romantic story" that felt way too rushed and a final reveal you could see coming a mile away but that doesn't tarnish the movie.

Monster Man is a movie you can't take seriously in order to enjoy. Not for everyone. An acquired taste. Bloody, mean spiritired, goofy, and entertaining. Go watch this if you can find a copy.
