Monster Hunter

Story: When Lt. Artemis and her loyal soldiers are transported to a new world, they engage in a desperate battle for survival against enormous enemies with incredible powers. Feature film based on the video game by Capcom.

By now we movie fans know what to expect from Paul W.S. Anderson, so if you go into Monster Hunter expecting anything other than cheesy thrills and big explosions you will be disappointed. I'm 110% sure this is as far an adaptation from its source material as you can get. I've never played the videogames myself (nor do I intend to) but I'm guessing hardcore fans will deeply loathe this.

Personally, I love the first of the Resident Evil series (and enjoyed some of the sequels), I love Milla Jovovich, enjoy Diego Boneta (Summer Camp) and I've been craving some dragon action since we don't get enough of them.

Action-wise this flick succeeds on every level. There are explosions every 10 to 15 minutes, wrecked cars, wrecked planes, hand to hand combats, monsters eating one-dimensional characters, and a lot of this happens in slow motion (obviously). I was actually impressed with how great the creatures look, they really went all out with the details of these monsters.

Milla Jovovich is great as per usual and this is basically her character from the Resident Evil series all over. The lady is in great shape and by now she can do her fight scenes with eyes closed. Not much is required from her other than get physical. Tony Jaa (Ong Bak) and her have great chemistry and together make quite the team (sometimes they are even funny). I actually enjoyed seeing Diego Boneta even with his very limited screentime (such a shame). Ron Perlman (Hellboy) is a great addition even while wearing a terrible wig.

The script is terrible; there is no depth or plot, and a lot doesn't make sense. The dialogue is filled with cringy one-liners and exposition. You won't care for any of the characters. Milla Jovovich's "Artemis" is basically a superhero who gets constantly thrown around and comes out unscathed. The editing is quick and stylish. Overall the experience feels like it had "too many cooks in the kitchen" as some parts feel like they belong in a different world/story.

This is pure entertainment. A movie that's so bad it works. Go in with your expectations on the floor and you just might have fun.
