Love And Monsters

Story: In a monster-infested world, Joel (Dylan O'Brien) learns his girlfriend is just 80 miles away. To make the dangerous journey, Joel discovers his inner hero to be with the girl of his dreams.

One of the first movies that came to mind while watching this is a little indie made by Garreth Edwards (Godzilla 2014) named Monsters. Now if you've yet to see that one, go ahead and find yourself a copy because it's honestly a really good romantic monster flick. I won't spoil anything, but both have a similar vibe, like, the focus is not so much on the creatures as it is about survival in a world dominated by giant beings.

Love And Monsters is one of those movies I've most been looking forward to this year and a huge surprise. Been a huge Dylan O'Brian fan since his Teen Wolf days (he was the best thing on that show) I just had to give this a try and the trailer seemed like fun. So what do I think of L&M? I think without exaggerating this is one of the most entertaining movies I've seen this year.

Love And Monsters is a light-hearted, entertaining, predictable, and well-made post-apocalyptic adventure with a fine performance by Dylan O'Brien who once again proves just how charismatic he is. This is his story no doubt as there's not a moment of screen-time he's not in. I loved his transition from man-child to bad-ass hero. We do have a couple of side characters to help the story like Jessica Henwick (Underwater) as the tough girl of his dreams who sets his journey into motion. She's very sweet even if underused. Michael Rooker (Slither) is one of the best parts adding a dose of humor while Ariana Greenblatt (A Bad Moms Christmas) is a child that's not annoying, a rare treat in these types of movies.

I'm not usually a fan of CGI as they take me out of the ordeal when you can tell there's a green screen behind the actor but color me surprised, the creatures themselves look impressive and terrifying. Clearly, a lot of detail went into them. I would've preferred some animatronics sure, but nonetheless, not bad.

Love And Monsters is not here to reinvent the wheel and I'm perfectly fine with that. There's a couple of cool action sequences and monster attacks but nothing gory or violent. Everything feels rather PG. To be honest, in this day and age it's refreshing to see a movie with no agenda, a movie made for the sole purpose of telling a story and entertaining the hell out of you with no pretensions.
