Julie And The Phantoms

Writer's picture: StonersaurusStonersaurus

Story: Julie is a teenage girl who finds her passion for music and life with the help of a high -concept band of teen boys (The Phantoms) who have been dead for 25 years. Julie, in turn, helps them become the band they were never able to be.

Came for the Booboo Stewart (here playing Willie, also known from Twilight's Wolf Pack and Disney Channels Descendants movies), and stayed for the catchy lyrics and amazing acting of newcomer Madison Reyes (Julie Molina). In the style of the not-so-memorable 2015's remake of "Gem and The Holograms", this Netflix adaption of the 2011's Nickelodeon Brazil show with the same name (in my opinion) did it right. Julie is a shy girl with lots of talent but seems to have lost her spark and passion for music after her mother died. Julie's dad, Ray Molina (one sexy boricua veteran actor Carlos Ponce) is worried about his daughter's state of mind since she refuses to play music or sing for over a year.

Before this, back in 1995 our cute Ghost Musicians Luke (Charles Gillespie from Charmed 2018), Alex (Owen Joyner from Nickelodeon's Knight Squad), and Reggie (Jeremy Shada voice actor for 2016 Voltron's Lance and Adventure Time's Finn) three friends that back in '95 after giving it their all and making big sacrifices were about to make their dream come true, but by a funny yet sad event died before getting to perform. Back in 2020 while "cleaning out" her mother's studio, Julie finds and plays an old CD with music by our ghostly musicians and *puff* they appear in front of her from what seems to be only seconds after they died and apparently only Julie can see them.

After getting the "Welcome to the New Millennium/ you're dead now" scene, we get the story rolling. Julie starts singing once more (the song "Wake Up") and with the help of her new Spirit Squad, she also starts writing music again. While attempting to regain her spot on the school's music program, the band mysteriously started playing the song with her just like they practiced only this time Julie wasn't the only one that could see them, when the guys play music alone they are heard, but when they perform with Julie while they are still playing the music they are visible and heard by all.

Being extremely skeptical about it, I watch it and at first calling it the Latina Jem and The Holograms but after listening to songs like "Unsaid Emily" and "Wake Up" my heart was completely in it. After finishing the 1st of at least one more season, I'm hooked on the characters, the message of the story, and I just downloaded the music to my Spotify.

This fun thoughtful series might start off a little Disney Channel-ish, but it gets more mature and a bit dark by the end. If you like cute guys playing music, believe in the power of friendship, and like your friendly ghost stories you should totally check out "Julie and The Phantoms" on Netflix.
