Story: Despite his devotion to his hometown of Salem (and its Halloween celebration), Hubie Dubois is a figure of mockery for kids and adults alike. But this year, something is going bump in the night, and it's up to Hubie to save Halloween.
I know Adam Sandler (Big Daddy) has a devoted fan base who eats every crap he makes like its candy but in my book he's a hit or miss. That said, I find him very charismatic and has a couple of interesting choices under his belt like Punch Drunk Love, The Cobbler, Click, Mr. Deeds & Uncut Gems. Even if mediocre his films tend to at least be entertaining (looking at you Murder Mystery).
Hubie Halloween is by far his worst movie in a long time. That is a complete shame because the talent behind is incredible. On paper, this should've been funny with the likes of Julia Bowen (Modern Family), Maya Rudolph (Bridesmaids), Ray Liotta (Identity), Kenan Thompson (Good Burger), Ben Stiller (Zoolander), Steve Buscemi (Ghost World), Rob Schneider (The Hot Chick), and so on.
The script is bad. The jokes fall flat, are immature and the whole premise is super silly. The plot is all over the place and no matter how hard the cast tries they just can't make this work. I didn't laugh once. Now don't get me wrong, I love stupid movies as much as the next guy but, is this the best they could come up with?
Now, I appreciated the fact that this was shot in Salem, Massachusets. I went there a couple of years ago and fell in love with the town so it was great recognizing on-screen places I visited. I'm also a sucker for Halloween themed movies and Hubie Halloween at least got that right. Also, what was up with Adam Sandler and that stupid voice he used throughout? That might've worked for Little Nicky (LN was supposed to be goofy and absurd) but here felt annoying and distracting. P.S. was almost as bad as Artemis Fowl.
