Freedom Fighters: The Ray

Writer's picture: StonersaurusStonersaurus

Imagine if the Nazi's had won the war; this is the setting for DC's Earth X, An alternate reality where our favorite heroes are part of the Nazi Armada and some of the lesser known heroes are the "Resistance" against this tyrannical world order.

(Mostly U.S.A based, but still) Ray Terrill AKA The Ray, a super hero with powers described as PhotoKenetic or in plain English, he shoots light beams out his body. He was one of the many DC LGBTQ+ characters to hit a little bit of the spotlight along side other LGBTQ+ heroes like Supergirl's adoptive sister (Alex Danvers), Arrow's White Canary and Mister Terrific.

The Ray is in DC's Arrowverse 2017's Crossover event, and is played by the sexy Russell Tobey (HBO's Looking Series & Movie) and paired with Wentworth Miller (Prison Break) reprising his role as Captain Cold from Earth X. A few months later, we get the animated version of this crossover with Earth 1's Ray Terrill as the main character.

Though this story is a stand alone we have some similarities in continuity evil Supergirl, Evil Green Arrow (and adding a Nazi Speedster to the pack) are fighting the "Freedom Fighters" lead by The Ray and Cisco Ramon aka Vibe (from Earth X) we see Phantom Lady, Black Condor, Red Tornado and Dollman as they try to hold their own against these 3 Power Houses.

After loosing Red Tornado, an artificial intelligence humanoid android, we have a wounded and almost dying Ray, jump to Earth 1 with Red Tornado's memory drive containing information about location and plans against the Nazi Regine. Now on Earth 1 and in front of his "Doppelganger" (other reality version of yourself) he transfers the memory drive and his powers to the innocent and totally confused Ray from Earth 1. Once powered up and after figuring out he is now a meta human (super powered human) we get the typical scenes where the discovery of powers, life saving and a "better" quality of life because of this new found powers happen, but we also have a coming out story.

Earth 1 Ray Terrill is a 22 year old lawyer from Tulsa living with his "very conservative" parents, trying to living up to the shadow of his dead older brother and dealing with the fact that he is gay and he's family might not accept him. So unlike other heroes living a double life, The Ray is now living a triple life. Not only hiding his powers but also hiding his sexual orientation from his family. After coming out to his family and accepting he isn't his brother's protégé, he finally realizes his full potential and becomes the hero he is meant to be.

Ray has always been fighting for those without voices and with his new powers he actually just expands his reach of people he can help out. Out and proud and a hero of his own making, The Ray together with The Freedom Fighters are one of many queer centered stories being released by DC Comics.
