Story: "Ellie tries to mend her marriage with her husband Marcus after a brief encounter with an old friend, David, only to find that David is more dangerous and unstable than she'd realized."
This is one of the worse movies I've seen this year. For every decent movie Netflix release (Extraction, Eurovision Song Contest: The Story Of Fire Saga, Lost Girls) there are some truly questionable releases (Dangerous Lies, The Wrong Missy, Desperados). But even so, Fatal Affair is a pointless waste of time. In the vein of Obsessed, The Intruder, The Roommate, & the terrible Unforgettable.
From the opening credits you know what's gonna happen, so there's no tension whatsoever. No build-up. No personality. No excitement. No soul. Nothing. This is strictly by the numbers. As plain as any movie can get. There's no style or substance and much of it looks straight out of Lifetime Channel. This is as mediocre as one can get. A thriller with no thrills. Some decent gore would've at least given an edge.
Even so, I went into this somewhat excited because I enjoy these type of flicks. I get a kick out of them no matter how bad they are. Fatal Affair started off quite nicely, the first 30 minutes or so were tolerable & filled with some sexual tension. Nia Long is a decent lead who is clearly above the material but even she can't make this story (that's been done to death) interesting. Omar Epps looks crazy enough but the movie never lets him run wild and he's not menacing enough. Maya Stojan (who plays the best friend) is one of the stupidest characters this year. The rest of the cast does okay. Nothing memorable.
The third act, which is where these type of stories run amok, fails to inject any type of energy. The movie never goes too crazy with anything. Everything is too safe even by PG-13 standards. The type of movie your grandma or people who think Justice League is a masterpiece would enjoy.
Fun Fact: Nia Long & Omar Epps appeared together in Alfie (2004) & In Too Deep.
