Today I had the opportunity to watch a screening of Drama Drama online. I didn't know what I was getting myself into as I didn't read so much as a synopsis or saw a trailer on youtube (which is beneath me because I love spoiling myself movies). What I got is what critics refer to as a "mixed bag" of unmemorable songs, pacing issues, cheesy teen drama, pure eye candy, a charming cast, and Cheri Oteri as a "cool" high school principal.
The Good And The Bad:
The musical numbers are well-choreographed even if most of the songs are unmemorable.
There are way too many characters and none of them are fleshed out properly. They're mostly just walking stereotypes.
Because of the many characters, we never really care for their blossoming relationships or their befalls, making the whole ordeal quite tedious.
The story is all over the place and way too much stuff is happening at once.
I feel like 10 to 15 minutes would've helped with the pacing issues. Did we really need one of the characters rapping what was going on?
Gotta give this props for its anti-bullying message.
The cast is really likable and they make the most of their one-dimensional characters. Also, they all have really beautiful voices. Michelle DeFraites (Project Almanac) stood out for me because she reminded me of Anna Faris with a mix of Emma Stone.
Cheri Oteri (Scary Movie) is one of the highlights of the film.
If you fancy light-hearted teen movies and musicals then I believe you just might enjoy this movie. It's something along the lines of Were The World Mine, GBF, Mean Girls, and Feel The Beat. It's far from perfect and not my cup of tea but I believe the target audience will definitively get a kick out of this on a streaming channel. Drama Drama has all the right ingredients and it's somewhat empowering to young girls.
