Dedsa's Art

A few details about the life of Dedsa:

There’s always been three things I’ve done all my life: drawing, dancing and singing. I am a homeschooled graduate and a lover of all forms of art. I’ve been drawing and creating characters ever since I can remember. When I was 12-13 years old I solicited and got into the Art Instruction Schools Program that educated and sent you assignments by mail. Even though I had self taught pretty well in proportions and character design (thanks to magazines like Game Pro, Game Informer and video game guides from Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy and others). I have to thank this school for teaching me a lot more, specially about perspective, shading, and thinking outside the box, so when I entered college at 17 years old I had a good background of art on me.

I have a Bachelors Degree in Fashion Design from the EIDA in UAGM (formerly known as Universidad del Turabo) and I currently don’t work as a fashion designer or seamstress because it is not my passion (and frankly sewing really hurts my back a lot).

In my final year of Bachelor Degree, I wrote a thesis about fashion for women with disabilities and created a five garment collection for a woman who was missing a limb and a video presentation where I talk about the importance of the investigation that was presented in the Caribe Hilton Hotel in the IMAGEN Runway Trends where the woman who was my muse modeled the long dress from the collection.

I do love fashion design, but I would like to direct that into costume design, always have. I’m a Ballroom Dance Instructor (which is a dream come true for me) and I’m looking to expand my knowledge by going back to college and getting a Masters Degree and become a certified Dance Therapist. I would also like to take some Character Design and Animation classes at some point. For now, I’m currently healing from a hip surgery and art has been my best friend and therapeutic way of turning a negative situation into a positive one.

What do these drawings mean to you?

All my sketches, drawings, designs and illustrations are very personal for me. I put a lot of work into all of them and I’m very passionate about how I express myself and how detailed I can be. One of the most important things for me is to be able to evoke an emotion from the spectator (be it what it may), that makes an impression and it becomes memorable. But most importantly, I try to remember that it’s about the artist bringing their vision to life.

What inspired you to draw these dark pieces?

Until very recently, I’ve personally always been terrified of drawing something creepy or horror related for irrational fears of the drawing coming to life or hunting me. And yet, one day I remember having this image of a contorted-horrific "woman" creature and decided to draw it. Seeing what had come from my imagination scared me and at the same time liberated me. After that one, my way of thinking changed and I decided to let my creativity flow and be free to be. Since art is an expression of oneself, my guess is that I was scared to tap into that part of myself and explore it. Unbeknownst that it would make me feel better and open new doors as an artist in many ways than one.
