American Psycho is an acquired taste. One that took me a couple of tries to really appreciate what was happening and what was being said. But ultimately, this is a hell of an experience, made even better by a dedicated performance by Christian Bale (Reign Of Fire).
The guy truly gave his soul to this twisted character and made Patrick Bateman his own.
Even if you hate the genre, you need to experience this for his acting alone. The supporting cast is just as great. I'm gonna go ahead and say Chloe Sevigni (Boys Don't Cry) is the closest we get to a likable being in this tale. We have a memorable performance by Willem Dafoe (of Spider Man fame....is there anything the guy can't do?). Jared Leto (Urban Legend) has somewhat of a cameo as a really unlikable douchebag. We have Reese Witherspoon, Justin Theroux, Josh Lucas, Samantha Mathis.... Do I need to go on?
I will describe American Psycho as cold but elegant. A story about a peculiar douchebag with delusions of grandeur and a taste for blood, fine wines & 80's pop music. I'm so glad this has reached cult states and can finally be appreciated. A musical was even made in its honor. One that from what I've seen holds the same spirit.
If you've seen this and felt captured by the story unraveling I highly recommend another great movie based on a book by the same writer Bret Easton Ellis named The Rules Of Attraction. Though ignoring the violent nature of this film, they both delve into the minds of selfish, self-destructive, impulsive, & wealthy people.

Here's a song I enjoy from the musical:
